Yugapurushan-Sri Naryana guru
I saw the Malayalam movie, Yugapurushan. It is an epic film about Sri Narayana Guru, a community reformer or better a social reformer. Even if I am not in that sect, long before I heard about him and started to admire him. Once or twice I visited his birth place Chempazanthi, then Aruvipuram and Varkala Sivagiri. Now I went to see this film. It is not the story or biography of the guru. I felt it is all about guru's mind and his final emotional conflict. In this film we can see his mind, the real mind. After seeing this movie one thing I understood that Sri Narayana guru and his philosophy is highly deep and it is in depth more than what I thought. I thought he is a reformer of his community. No he is the reformer of the whole people of Kerala.
He really really uplifted the lower class of peoples. And he succeeded on this within a short period. In a time of Kings and his fellow rulers it was very difficult to succeed in such a move by an ordinary person. Sorry to mention, ordinary person, he is an extra ordinary personality. He tried to uplift not only ezhava community but also pulaya, paraya and kurava communities. After forming few temples to ezhava, guru found that the same fellows in his community opposed to allow the other lower communities to enter in the temple built by guru. What is to be understood from this? Few members of SNDP started to fight to get ruling power on these temples and other assets. It really made guru very sad. By this time ezhavas got freedom to move, freedom of worship and everything in the society. All these are only because of Sri Narayana guru.
How he attained such a tremendous power. An ordinary person cannot do all these things in a life time. How Gandhi succeeded in obtaining freedom to millions of India. They were connected with God. The God power acted upon through them. I have a thought that guru had more ideas to do for Kerala, but he stopped and tried to escape to Cylone. We, Keralites lost a lot of things that could be possible by him. I have a strong feeling that he had lots of ideas to implement after uplifting his community and the basic social conditions. But we lost a golden chance. We have to remember that it is very rare to get such a divine personality on Earth again. We could not utilize his power fully.
When guru came to this Earth the condition of lower class peoples in Kerala were very worse. First he uplifted his community then he was coming to other classes. But after gaining all the status in the society the very same community showed the same characteristics of the then high class people, that is untouchability etc. Then they started fighting for power. This is the same behavior possessed by higher class, for the same thing guru fought for. Then his own class acquired the same bad qualities. Where did he failed?
He tried to make his people as same as high class sects in the field of worship, freedom of movement etc. Why he built temples? To make the lower class also same as higher class. What happened after coming to higher level? They also showed the bad qualities of higher class people.
In my opinion he should not try to make the lower class as same as higher class. They should have been uplifted from where they are. They tried to imitate the then higher classes. Actually they should have find their own way of upliftment. It was not through getting more temples or institutions. They should be uplifted from their mental plane or spiritual plane. Then this community would be capable to lead the whole Kerala with the insight and help of Sri Narayan guru. Then it would have been a better place to live in Kerala. Other than Sri Naryana guru or Sri Chattambi swami or Sri Ayyankali who else were suitable for the uplift of the total society of Kerala. Did the so called political leaders do any movement in this sort. Why the poor stay poor after the long period of independence.
Recently I happened to see a video visual of a colony where pulaya set of people living. What is the reason they are still in such a bad condition. Is it not possible to take care of them in this people's democracy? What is to be understood from all these things? It is clear that for some political parties they should be poor all the time. They should not be uplifted. For the sake of some parties these unprivileged must be unprivileged for ever. Do we require another Narayana guru or Gandhi to come again?
